What is Muumuu Month?
Muumuu Month began in 2015 when Kauaʻi artist and designer Shannon Hiramoto decided to showcase her love for vintage muʻumuʻus. Inspired by a box of vintage dresses gifted to her, she wore a different muʻumuʻu every day in January and shared her journey on social media with the hashtag #muumuumonth. Her passion sparked a movement, inspiring women across Hawaii to join in celebrating this iconic Polynesian fashion.
The Purpose of Muumuu Month
Now recognized across Hawaii, Muumuu Month is a tribute to the unique fashion history of Polynesia and an homage to the tutu (grandmothers) and aunties who have embraced the muʻumuʻu for generations. It’s a celebration of culture, community, and creativity.
